Traveling allows me to see the world through my eyes

Laptop

For the last two trips (Spain 2008 and Scotland 2009) I have traveled with my very compact Sony Vaio Laptop. Although it is much smaller and lighter it has the full functions of a regular full sized laptop.  I have all the standard windows Microsoft Office software loaded plus PS4 for photo editing purposes.

Although it is an added weight to my luggage, I find that the convenience it brings far outweighs the added weight to my carry-on.

  • I use it to save all of my travel notes, maps, confirmation documents.
  • I use it to blog and journal with.
  • I use it to upload my photos to at the end of each day from my memory cards. Before I leave on my trips I create daily file folders for my photos, travel journal and blog entries.  The ability to upload my photos daily helps to keep them very organized.
  • I also use it to store my music and a couple of TV Shows and movies.

Prior to taking my laptop I kept a handwritten journal, used a portable storage device to download all of my photos to each night and would have to find Internet cafes to blog. First of all, I have terrible penmanship and could never read what I write. And I can type much faster that I can write which makes my travel blogging much easier and quicker. Time better spent exploring around. Second, I find that creating daily folders to save my photos to while on the road is much easier to remember the places that I visited because they are organized and I can attach notes to the folders. And lastly, it is much more convenient to use my own laptop than to use the foreign keyboards when blogging and journaling. And I don’t have to depend on the operating hours of the Internet cafes.

WI-FI

Here I am in the convenience of my hotel room on the Isle of Sky in the Highlands of Scotland, uploading my photos with a beautiful view just outside my window.   They offered free Wi-Fi to all of their guests.  It made it easier for me to download all of my photos after each day of sightseeing.  I was also able to blog while enjoying a beautiful view.  Let’s just say that I was feeling very inspired while blogging!   😀

INTERNET ACCESS CENTER

These days your apartment/hotel/B&B may offer Wi-Fi or at the very least an internet access computer on their property for free.  The only challenge (and this applies more to larger hotels with a larger number of guests) with so many travelers being more Internet savy, it can be a challenge to find the Internet computer free for use.  I was lucky to wake up one early morning to find the computer free.  But it was only a few minutes before other guests were waiting for me to get off.

Here is an Internet computer that was available in the lobby of my hotel in Prague.  It was often being used and sometimes you have to wait your turn to use it.

INTERNET CAFES

If my lodging does not have Wi-Fi Internet access, I will use an Internet café which isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s kind of a fun adventure in a way. For example, in Venice, Italy I used this Internet café in a small campo where I sat next to a lounging dog who’s owner was an older gentlemen typing away on the Internet.  I wished that I had taken a photo of that image because it was so cute.

In Spain there was a really nice Internet Cafe/Bar combo and it was pretty cool to sit, relax with a nice cup of coffee and update my blog.

So although using an Internet cafe isn’t as convenient as having wi-fi in your hotel/apartment, the experience can be kind of fun and interesting.
