Traveling allows me to see the world through my eyes

San Gimignano

Day 16 – San Gimignano
  • Take the bus to San G.
  • Torre Grossa

“Italian Manhattan”

We take the bus to go to the small town of San G.  It’s nick named the Italian Manhattan for its 14 medieval towers rising above the City.

When we enter the walled city we walk up a small pedestrian street that goes straight up towards Torre Grossa, the only tower that is open to the public. We decide to go up the tower first before the crowds arrived.  The weather pretty cool and cloudy.  Thank goodness we remembered to bring our rain jackets.

We pay a small entrance fee and store our backpacks in the provided lockers.  The stairs were probably the most modern of all the buildings and towers that we hiked up during this entire trip. when we reach the top you can see the whole city and all of its surrounding hillside.  Gorgeous!  It’s so cool how these narrow towers ascend up into the air.  Whether or not it would remotely remind me of downtown Manhattan is another thing.

After descending from the tower, we walk through the small museum and admire some of the artwork before we leave..  After descending from the tower, we walk through the small museum and admire some of the artwork before we leave.

We explore the city’s small winding streets and alleyways.

We stumble upon some very nice views, flower gardens and views of the wine vineyards.  Well, it was nearing the time of our scheduled bus returning to Siena so we head back towards the exit.  I stop in a small shop to buy some souvenirs.  My friend walks ahead and I later find her in one of the shops. I decide to buy another item.  When I go to pull out my coin purse I notice that it was gone.  I thought that I had just dropped it somewhere.  My friend asks me which store I was in last to buy something and insisted that we return in case it dropped there and someone found it.  I was not so hopeful.  When we get there the couple that worked there remembered me and gave me my coin purse.  She said that I left it there when I bought my souvenirs.   I didn’t have a lot of money in there but that was sort of my good luck coin purse.

To celebrate my good fortune, we buy some gelato!  I get a hang nail . . . buy gelato . . . it’s starting to rain . . . buy gelato!  Well, you get the drift!  Anytime is gelato time!  tthe time we get to the bus stop, it was beginning to rain.  Our bus arrives and we head back to Siena.  The light rain has now turned into a downpour.

We arrive in Siena dropped off our things and head back to our hotel.
